Harvesting Season in Douro Valley

Europe > Portugal > Douro Valley

The harvest in the Douro Valley is an excellent way to live one of the highest moments to local people – it's time to pick the grapes. You can join a local family and participate in their work. Or you can have an experience in one of the Quintas that provides that programme. Both will share with you their knowledge, joy and food. And after picking the grapes, delight yourself with the local flavours at a lunch with typical Douro food and have a Port Wine tasting in one of these Wine Estates.

Harvesting is a unique and authentic experience where you will get to know the entire production process of the magnificent Douro wines.
In Douro Valley, the grapes are harvested between September and October. The region is visited at this time by many travelers who want to see the grape picking and participate in the cutting and treading of the grapes.

The harvest time is the fruit of a year of work and, for this reason, it is a very important season.
A programme of harvesting is made for those who like outdoor activities and who want to get involved with the passionate landscapes of the Douro Valley. It involves walking through the vineyards that are part of World Heritage listed by Unesco since the year of 2001.
The grape harvesting season in Douro is a time to explore this ancient making-wine tradition but also to discover the Douro valley, a remarkable wine region. With a local family, you will take part in the grape harvesting process: picking the grapes and sending them to a winery.

We are Sílvia and António and we live in Ervedosa do Douro, a village on the southern bank of river Douro. We’ve created Douro Walks, a project based on hiking tours and experiences in Douro valley. Our family works in the terraces of vineyards, olive and almond trees for generations. We are committed with the Douro culture and landscape. We intend to share that with you. Our programmes are private and customizable and are meant to provide an authentic look into the sights, traditions, food and wine of Douro Valley.

We have visited the Valley on a previous trip from Canada but not at harvest time. We would love to participate in some way. Could you please let me know what is available for a couple and approximate costs? Timing for us would be September 29 to October 6/23. Obrigada!

Hi Ruth,

Thank you for your interest.

Considering your dates, we are just available on the 5th of October, Thursday. And about a programme of harvest, we are small grape producers and not really a farm. We do harvest with the family and with some people from the village. Of course you can join. But there is other situation: we don't know if we will be harvesting at these days.

Anyway the programme can include some interaction with our life here and we include a typicl picnic lunch. This has a total cost of 220€ / 2 people / private tour. This is similar to one programme we have at our webpage called «Ervedosa do Douro walk».

Please let us know if this works for you.

Thank you,

António

Hiking in Douro Valley

This walk begins in Pinhão train station and allows us to go at the hilltop of Casal de Loivos, a small village close to Pinhão. It’s a short walk but it shows perfectly the magnificent Douro valley: villages, valleys, vineyards and olive trees.
