An adventure into history
What do we expect for our visit?
Beach
Beach
It is quite common for locals in Hong Kong do their camping on the beach or elsewhere in close vicinity. The beach also attracts people which makes it an alternative choice to Rocky Bay (Shek O). When I was there, a part of the beach is under some kind of site improvement. I was still able to reach the rock craving but experienced a bit difficulty.
Big Wave Bay
Big Wave Bay
Big Wave Bay is very famous for the environment favouring people who love surfing. A stall situated near the beach rent out equipment for surfing as well as some water sports. This place is a bit dangerous because the wave is quite strong and some sea caves is close by. And rocks are sharp along the coastline.
Leading to Pottinger Peak
Hong Kong Trail Section 8
Some expats and exchange students may be interested to do hiking in Hong Kong. This trail has an entrance at the initial checkpoint of Big Wave Bay. It is possible a way on the mountain accessing Dragon's Back. I am not quite sure so please contact the local government body Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department in Hong Kong for more details.
Meterorite Stone
Meteorite Stone
I believe everyone around the beach should notice this stone. I am not quite sure I can find the name of this stone. Alrighty! I make a name for it! I name it "Meterorite Stone". Once you get the right track to the rock craving, you won't miss out Meterorite Stone!
Myterious Cave
Mysterious Cave
This cave is hidden at the corner of somewhere! Where can you find it? Do you see a beach? Yes, of course! Big Al is just asking a silly question. Let's take a good look around the beach and see what will you find. The cave is actually on the beach. On your left, yeah it is just a way to the rock craving. It does not look like the cave on the beach. On your right? Spot on! You found it! I do not suggest people walking into the cave. Some people may go in and reaching to another side of the world. Who knows? Besides the cave, you will find the nose of Turtle Hill. But you cannot reach there.
Rock craving at Big Wave Bay
Rock Craving
This rock craving is not hard to reach. When you walk pass the beach, you will find a barbaque site. After passing the site, you will see a way directing you to the rock craving.
Turtle Hill
Turtle Hill
When you get a close up view on it, you cannot know it looks like a turtle or something. However, I was standing next to the rock craving and lookout the ocean and I spot this turtle! Can you notice a sea cave next to the turtle?
What are the opening hours?
There is no specified opening hours for this rock craving. You literally can go there at anytime you want because no gate is installed at this part of history. One thing need to mention that the place can be easily reached by transportation though. The place is quite remote so only small local food stalls are available for feeding your stomach and solve your thirsty problem along the way. This rock craving is the easiest one to reach amongst others in all my visit for rock cravings in Hong Kong. And I believe that the craving at Big Wave Bay is the most interesting and the most clear one.
How to reach there?
There are two ways reaching Perfect Mount Gardens where the Red Minibus Terminal we are looking for our journey. The easiest way is Shau Kei Wan MTR Exit A1. When you turn right, you will see the terminus straightforward after a second. Enter into this indoor facility and the immediate row is the one you are looking for. Please double check if the minibus will go to Big Wave Bay. If not, hand in a paper with the sentence "唔該我要去大浪灣" which mean please take me to Big Wave Bay in Cantonese. If the driver is nice, then it is your luck for the day. If not, you need to reach the terminus (Shek O) and find your way to Big Way Bay. Don't worry too much! Be sure to sit in front seat at your best endeavour. Remember that the stop you are heading actually is a big car park. It is pretty obvious but the time is against you. Shout "唔該大浪灣有落", which means "please drop me off Big Wave Bay", before it is too late. A single trip costs you HK $10 by the time I wrote this article.
Bus No. 9 is another choice. The bus terminal is situated next to Shau Kei Wan MTR Station Exit A3. Please take note on whether the bus pass through Big Wave Bay (Tai Long Wan) which is the same way as the red minibus I mentioned. This one is much easier than the red minibus. A single trip costs you HK $7.20 by the time of my writing.
