A Trip To The Confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers

One of the highlights of my trip to Ladakh, a desert plateau in Northern India, was visiting the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers near Nimo village on the Kargil – Leh highway. Located about 35 kilometers before Leh city and 6 kilometers from Nimo, the view at this point is quite breathtaking.

We went on this trip from Leh in May 2016 and it was one of the most awe-inspiring places I saw in Ladakh. Tall, sandy mountains almost devoid of vegetation slope down on either side of the river to meet at a Y-shaped curve called the confluence where the two rivers join.

A little one-storey cabin near the road belonging to Indus Himalayan Explorers, offers rafting and kayaking gear for the more adventurous traveller. This is a fantastic place to enjoy water sports, or just stand and skip pebbles over the waters. Go here for a memorable family picnic.
