Here's what to expect before Mountain Biking one of the World's Tallest Active Volcanos

How to Get to Cotopaxi National Park

High up in the Andes mountains, Cotopaxi National Park lies just 50 km (31 miles) south from Ecuador's capital city Quito. If you're lucky and it's a clear day out, there's a chance you might even see the towering peak from the city.

Bus

Buses running between Quito and Latacunga drop you off at the turnoff to Control Caspi, the southern entrance to the park. Buses take about 1.5 hours to reach the turn-off, the closest point by public transport to the park. From here, it's about 4 miles (6 km) on foot to the park entrance, Control Caspi, and further to the points of interest inside the park.

Train

Take Quito's Chimbacalle railway station to El Boliche/Cotopaxi railway station in Areá Nacional de Recreación El Boliche in the northwest of the park. Trains run on Thursdays (in July and August) plus Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays year-round from Chimbacalle station in the mornings only.

This is how we got to Cotopaxi National Park. We went on a private tour and were picked up from our hotel by our guide at 7am. After the tour, they dropped us off at the airport to catch our red eye flight home. Group tours are also an option.

Car

Rent a car in Quito, and it's a 2-hour drive south of Quito

Mountain Biking - Cotopaxi National Park

I booked the mountain bike tour in Cotopaxi because I knew Logan would LOVE it, AND because I like riding bikes too. Conquering Death Road in Bolivia gave me confidence after all. And we've been riding bikes all summer, I got this.

In Cotopaxi National Park, I went on an adventurous mountain biking tour instead of traditional hiking. With an altitude of 19,347 feet (5,897 m) this not only makes it one of the highest active volcanoes but also sure to give me altitude sickness.

Ready to experience the exhilaration of mountain biking in Cotopaxi National Park, we arrive at the base of the volcano at 13,000 ft (9,963 m) and I can already feel the altitude. Headache, nausea, and difficulty breathing - yep. We were high.

Is Mountain Biking Cotopaxi Difficult?

Imagine the adrenaline rush as you navigate the road, peaking at the top of a volcano before descending with the speed and precision only a mountain biker can master.

That was Logan. Then imagine feeling the crunch of dirt and rocks beneath your tires, the jolt of excitement as you take on each unexpected twist and turn at what feels like top speed. All the while hoping that you don't get thrown off the bike by one of the giant rocks in the road from the last eruption. That was me.
Mountain biking down the dirt roads and single tracks were challenging for me - even though we only had 15 miles on "flat terrain" it felt like we were going UP HILL at some points. Some miles into the ride I was dripping in sweat and we were biking against the wind, uphill, and in high altitude - so yeah I struggled a bit.

However, you'll be fine if you're in moderately good shape and have good weather conditions. I ended up taking a break in the back of the truck that follows you down - and was highly disappointed in myself for needing to do so. I had, after all, conquered Death Road... 10 years ago... when I was in much better shape and 10 years younger.

But it's not just about the challenge that comes with the ride. It's also about immersing yourself in the beauty of the landscape surrounding you. As every adventurer knows, there's no better way to become one with nature than getting outside.

What to Expect mountain Biking in Cotopaxi

Whether you are a seasoned mountain biker or a daring beginner ready to take on the challenge, Cotopaxi National Park offers an adventure that will leave you breathless. Discover the thrill of the ride, appreciate the beauty of the wilderness, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Get ready to mount your bike, breathe in the fresh, crisp air, and take on the rugged terrain of Cotopaxi National Park.
Because once you conquer the mountains, you'll realize you can conquer anything.

So, are you ready for the ride of your life?
