Islands of Paradise: A 7-Day Journey Through Andaman's Hidden Gems

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, nestled in the Bay of Bengal, are renowned for their pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and rich marine life. The Andaman and Nicobar Island offers a multitude of experiences just waiting to be explored. Everyone can find something to enjoy, whether it's relaxing on immaculate beaches, exploring the colorful underwater environment, or getting a taste of the local way of life. I had a heart full of memories and a strong desire to go back after my incredible voyage to this tropical paradise.

During our winter sojourn in the Andamans, we spent about two days in Port Blaire including arrival, three days in Havelock island, two days in Neil island, and one last day at Port Blare. This seven-day itinerary covers the essential highlights, combining relaxation, adventure, and cultural exploration. Here's a well-rounded travel plan for your trip across Port Blair, Havelock Island, and Neil Island.

Day 1: Arrival at Port Blair


Morning:

  • Arrive at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair.
  • Check in to your hotel, freshen up, and get ready to explore the city.

Afternoon:

  • Cellular Jail: Begin your journey with a visit to the historic Cellular Jail, a colonial-era prison that holds a deep significance in India's freedom struggle. Take a tour of the cells and learn about the lives of freedom fighters.

Evening:

  • Chidiya Tapu Beach: Rich mangrove woods that are home to many migratory birds make the beach incredibly attractive. You can click lovely pictures at the time of sunset. Ask the exact location for sunset views to localities or auto-rickshaw drivers.

  • Light & Sound Show: Return to the Cellular Jail in the evening to witness the famous light and sound show, which beautifully narrates the sacrifices of the freedom fighters.
    Stroll at Marina Park: After the show, head to Marina Park for a peaceful evening stroll by the bay.

Day 2: Explore Port Blair


Morning:

  • Ross Island: After breakfast, take a ferry to Ross Island, once the administrative capital of the British. Explore the remnants of British architecture, the old church, and the scenic surroundings.

Afternoon:

  • North Bay Island: After Ross Island, head to North Bay for an underwater adventure. Go for snorkeling or try sea walking to experience the vibrant coral reefs and marine life.

Evening:

  • Corbyn's Cove Beach: Return to Port Blair and spend your evening at Corbyn's Cove, a serene beach perfect for relaxing with a sunset view.

We were unable to visit Ross Island and North Bay Island owing to adverse weather conditions. So we explored the adjacent villages including Wandoor Beach. The beach is lovely, however there are many crocodiles in the sea. If you have more days in your hand, you can visit surrounding islands such as Jolly Buoy Island, Red Skin Island, and Alexandra Island.

Day 3: Port Blair to Havelock Island


Morning:

  • Ferry to Havelock: Take an early morning ferry to Havelock Island (now Swaraj Dweep). The ride offers stunning views of the ocean, and you'll reach Havelock in about 1.5-2 hours.

Afternoon:

  • Radhanagar Beach: Once you arrive, check into your beachside resort and head straight to Radhanagar Beach. This beach is consistently ranked as one of the best in Asia, with powdery white sand and clear blue waters.

Evening:

  • Relax by the beach, soak in the sunset, and unwind after a long day of travel.

Day 4: Havelock Island Adventure


Morning:

  • Scuba Diving at Nemo beach: Start your day early with an exhilarating scuba diving experience. All travel agencies which offers adventure sports, suggests Nemo beach in Govindnagar for scuba diving. Here you can also do snorkeling. The mangrove forests on Nemo Beach make it look quite intriguing.

  • Kala Pathar and Vijay Nagar Beach: For travelers looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in a serene, unspoiled corner of Havelock Island, Kala Pathar Beach is a hidden gem worth exploring. It's the perfect spot for introspection, photography, or simply basking in nature's beauty. You can spend early morning time here.

  • Elephant Beach: Elephant Beach is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, offering a variety of activities suitable for all experience levels. The shallow, crystal-clear waters make it ideal for snorkeling, giving you a front-row seat to some of the most vibrant marine life in the Andaman Islands. The coral reefs here are colorful and teeming with a variety of fish, making it a popular snorkeling and scuba diving spot. You can take trekking trail as well to reach the beach.

Afternoon:

  • Explore Local Markets: After lunch, take some time to explore the local markets of Havelock. You'll find handcrafted souvenirs, seashell artifacts, and local produce.

Evening:

Day 5: Havelock Island to Neil Island


Morning:

  • Ferry to Neil Island: Take a morning ferry from Havelock to Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), a smaller, more tranquil island known for its lush greenery and coral reefs.

Afternoon:
Bharatpur Beach: After checking into your resort, visit Bharatpur Beach, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging by the shore.

Evening:
Natural Bridge: Head to the Natural Bridge (Howrah Bridge), a fascinating rock formation that's perfect for a sunset visit and photography.

Day 6: Neil Island Exploration


Morning:

  • Laxmanpur Beach: Start your day at Laxmanpur Beach, a serene spot known for its stunning sunsets and calm waters. It's great for a morning walk or a swim.

Afternoon:

  • Sitapur Beach: Visit Sitapur Beach, located on the other side of the island. It's less frequented by tourists, offering peace and tranquility amidst scenic views.

Evening:

  • Visit Laxmanpur Beach again to see the lovely sunset, or relax at your resort or go shopping for island treasures.

Day 7: Return to Port Blair


Morning:
Ferry Back to Port Blair: After breakfast, take the ferry back to Port Blair.

Afternoon:
Samudrika Marine Museum: If you have time before your flight, visit the Samudrika Marine Museum, which gives an insight into Andaman's marine life, history, and tribal culture.

Evening:
Fly Back Home: Head to the airport with unforgettable memories of your Andaman adventure.

  • Ferry Booking: It's advisable to pre-book your ferry tickets between islands, especially during peak tourist seasons.
  • Weather: The best time to visit the Andaman Islands is from October to May, avoiding the monsoon season (June-September).
  • Marine Activities: Always choose licensed operators for scuba diving and snorkeling. Havelock and Neil Island are popular for these activities.
  • Local Cuisine: Try seafood delicacies like fish curry, crab, and prawns. Vegetarian options include coconut-based dishes and tropical fruits.

With this itinerary, you'll experience the perfect balance of adventure, history, and relaxation during your week-long trip to the Andaman Islands.
